This Is The Best Bargain Running Shoe Of The Year! (So Far)

Today, I'm excited to dive into a gem of a running shoe that's perfect for any runner looking for versatility and affordability.

A simple do-it-all shoe for a bargain price—isn't that what all runners want?

Manufacturers often push niche shoes, leading us to spend more money, but today I've got an absolute gem to test: the Adidas SL2.

Adidas SL 2 (black) and Adidas SL (White)

Rumor has it, this could be the bargain shoe of the year!

The Adidas SL2: A Versatile Performer

The Adidas SL2 joins Adidas’s legacy Adizero range of high-performance running shoes, standing alongside models like the super shoe Adios Pro and the classic uptempo daily Boston.

The SL2 is a classic daily shoe where you can pick up your pace and have some fun with your runs.

I bought this shoe 100% with my money, so you can expect a completely impartial and honest review, plus I also own the Adidas SL1, so I can give you a solid comparison between the two models.

Key Updates

  • Updated Upper: The new upper is lighter and more breathable.

  • Full-Length Lightstrike Pro Foam: This premium foam runs the entire length of the shoe, surrounded by updated Lightstrike 2.0 foam, making the shoe softer and more responsive.

Full-Length Lightstrike Pro Foam

  • Lighter Weight: The shoe now weighs just ~285 grams in a US size 12.

Facts and Figures

  • Purpose: Classic daily trainer, suitable for 5K, 10K, and half marathon racing or training.

  • Price: $129 in the US from RunningWarehouse

  • Stack Heights: 36mm at the back, with a 9mm drop.

  • Weight: 285 grams.

  • Upper: Engineered mesh.

  • Midsole: Full-length Lightstrike Pro foam, encapsulated by Lightstrike 2.0 foam.

  • Outsole: Adidas’s own rubber (not Continental as the previous model).

Outsole

  • Widths Available: Currently, only standard width, but hopefully wider options will be released soon.

  • Colorways: Three available.

  • Fit: True to size; if in doubt, go half a size up.

What I Loved

  1. Versatility: This shoe is perfect for most training runs and even some races. It's engaging and fun to run in, offering the right balance of softness and responsiveness.

  2. Lightweight: At 285 grams, the SL2 feels snappy and fun, providing an engaging ride.

  3. Value: The SL2 offers incredible value with premium foams at a budget price, providing a durable and enjoyable running experience.

A Few Dislikes

  • Narrow Fit: The shoe is on the narrower side, typical of Adidas's European fitting. If you have wide feet, this might not be the shoe for you.

  • Basic Laces: Some might find the laces a bit cheap, but they worked fine for me.

Do I recommend the Adidas SL2?

Absolutely yes!

This shoe is a fantastic addition to any runner's rotation, especially at this price point.

It's perfect for those who prefer a traditional feel without the added technology of rods or plates.

Compared to other budget options like the Puma Velocity Nitro 3, the SL2 offers a more engaging ride thanks to its premium foams.
